Learn The Game Before You Play It
I’ve been in this fitness game for quite a while now, and my biggest pet peeve is seeing people perform the wrong exercises for their body type, specifically with the wrong form. Most people think that by reading “Lose 15 pounds in 15 days”, in some fitness magazine, it will do exactly that. What you do not realize is these exercises and workouts are not specifically designed for YOU, rather the mass population. Unless you are a professional, you should not be creating your workouts from a fitness magazine.Everyone’s body composition, structure, and limitations differ. Are you aware of the proper steps to work in order to align and strengthen your lower back up to its full potential after it is injured? No magazine can guide you through these steps, and you cannot learn this by staring at the meathead next to you in the gym.
By reading a couple exercises and examining a few pictures, this does not entitle you certification to perform these complex exercises; however, it does make you a student eager to learn. Without proper instruction and guidance from a professional, you will never TRULY know if you are performing these exercises correctly, if the form is right or if these are even the right exercise you should be performing.
Having an instructor to teach you the proper mechanics of exercise is invaluable. If you are saying to yourself right now “I cannot ever afford it”, think of it as if you are going back to school, because that is exactly what it is. The one thing you cannot put a price tag on is your body; without it you do not exist.
If there is no way you can afford to spend $70 a session at your local gym, ask around, and I can guarantee you can find a trainer for more than half that price who is just as good, if not better. The reason being, most of these “underground trainers” are simply that good that they do not need the gym for client referrals, and are run solely off of word of mouth.
You need to build the foundation before the house can go up. Your body needs to be complete and readily structured before you can start building it up to its fullest potential. If you start to improperly train your body, I can guarantee you down the road you will regret it one way or another.
You can see this in our older generations. I would say 1 out of 3 of the old-school has had some type of shoulder, knee, or back issue that has severely limited their mobility and workouts today. Take your Dad, or Uncle or someone close to you for example.
The knowledge and resources available today are endless, which was not the case when these guys were learning the game years ago. Working out hard is not simply pushing iron around these days. So much focus is on self-myofascial releasing, stretching and balance movements, simply because it is an absolute necessity. The science has evolved, and so have the recipients, and this is why we are twice the athletes as our parent’s generation ever was.
