See The Angles
“If you can’t see the angles no more, you in trouble.” – Carlito’s Way.
Rather than getting into a long drawn out film analysis, I’ll run off a quote that stuck with me from Brian De Palma’s 1993 Crime-Thriller, Carlito’s Way.
Few and far away, there will come a quote I hear that truly changes my life, whether be from film, or real-life instances. I’m a big quote guy. I have a page of them sitting on the background of my macbook pro that I turn to every now and again whenever I need a pick-me-up. Noteworthy quotes have always given me inspiration to keep on keepin’ on.
Now back to this particular quote, which has given direction throughout the years. It’s about going into situations and seeing every viable option involved in the decision making process.
Look at each of life’s situations as a circle representation. There are 360 angles to see, and some are harder to point out than others. If you don’t see them, then you’re simply not looking hard enough.
Don’t take this number 360 literal. You can divide this number by whatever you want to come to an exact number of conclusions for each situation you encounter. I am simply saying this number to draw a complete picture for you, and assist you to envision the circular whole.
Determine each and every one of your options. Label them 1a, 1b, 1c, 2a, 2b, 3, 4, or whatever type of alpha-numeric labeling system works for you. For more complex business situations, the obvious is to pen and paper them out. Give yourself physical documentation to cross-examine time and time again.
Extensiveness never hurt nobody (I know), although it can sometimes unfortunately be a deadline-killer. Call me crazy, but I would rather go into a meeting late, than not prepared. I’m the type of person that ALWAYS has a counter-action to every re-action. If you’re not ready to be quick on your feet, you won’t make it.
Pride, determination, lust, motivation, envy, greed, and any other descriptive adjective of personal perseverance you can think of, can all be great things, if controlled properly, but can also very much cloud your vision when chasing after your goals.
You need to always have an out; Never get stuck. There is never just one way in or out of a gameplan, and that is one of the most crucial concepts you must take from all of this. Beware, because if you solemnly think there is, then my friend, “You in trouble”.
