Act As If…

One of the few respectable rolls that Ben Affleck holds under his credentials, belongs to that of the Wall Street-esq drama, Boiler Room. His unforgettable speech “Act As If”, is simply put- priceless. I can honestly testify that this is one of the most practical film speeches I have ever had the pleasure to view. The statement itself gives you a powerful impression of an undeserved fortune bought by bullshit, and that is the exact beauty behind it. Your life’s wealth is created in part 50% bullshit, 50% hard work.

To quote Affleck, “Act as if you are the fucking president of this firm. Act as if you have a nine inch cock. Act as if. To do this properly you need to at least look the part. So go get dressed.”

As long as you are not a blatant asshole about it, cockiness equals confidence. Everyone loves to hate that cocky asshole who bangs all the chicks and can nail an interview while having their boss secretly lust for the first day of work before they even leave the room. I am that guy. I act as if all the time. Be whoever the fuck you want to be. Do whatever the fuck you want to do. If someone calls you out, fuck ‘em, there’s always another person, another time.

This quote translates into real-life. Think about it…

You go on a date: Act as if you already fucked the girl. Women love an overly confident guy. Just make sure to throw in a “I’m just kidding honey” every once in a while. Women are like wolves and can sense fear. If you are nervous they will eat you like prey and move onto the next guy. Act as if you are too good for the good and you will knock her on her ass so fast she will crawl to you in order to find out what the hell gives you the right to speak to her that way.

You are going on a job interview: Act as if you already have it. Employers love someone with personality who will stand out from the bunch. If you get asked a question and do not know the answer, change the subject slightly and make up an answer similar to it. Make up credentials if you have to. David Geffen did to jump-start his career at WMA. Act as if you have done this job a million times and you will get hired every time. There is time to learn the actual job once you have it, and trust me, employers love teaching you “the ropes”.

Pitching a product / design / theory? Act as if the world will end if the buyer doesn’t get in now. Give whoever it is you are pitching reason to believe in you.  Fill them with so much confidence in you that they will jump onto whatever it is you are selling, no matter what it is.

Remember, whatever the situation may be, act as if you run it. Confidence employs value, which returns what you want. If you want to spend the next x amount of years of your life working your way up the ladder in whatever facet of the food chain it may be, have fun; I would rather use my smarts and good wits to talk my way through hell.
